Konosuke Takeshita (c) defeated SANADA for the NJPW World Television Championship
Music, entrance gear, and past titles of SANADA played before he came out, sporting red gear and hair.
He struck Takeshita out of thin air with a Cutter and a Shining Wizard after a heavy sprint to action. Takeshita planted him with a Bastard Driver and Blue Thunderbomb. The champion sent rolling elbows to his challenger. SANADA returned fire with another Shining Wizard. Convincing Takeshita and the referee of an injury, SANADA snuck in a roll-up. Following his accidental strike of the referee, Takeshita fell victim to a medical spray to the face and a guitar shot. Slip away as he may, SANADA ultimately fell to a Raging Fire.
Nice and crisp opener. Not necessarily a mindblowing bout, but certainly one to get the blood pumping. I’m not sure what’s to come with this version of SANADA, so I look forward to any developments coming from that. I adored the nostalgic entrance.
Jake Lee defeated El Phantasmo in a No DQ Match
Teasing a swordfight with chairs, Lee spilled into the barricade and fell flat thanks to a plancha. Phantasmo introduced a tall ladder to the match, which he leapt off of to topple his opponent. Lee interrupted Phantasmo’s air guitar taunt for a low blow and an air banjo taunt of his own. As Phantasmo set up a pyramid of chairs, he’d take the occasional break to swing one or two into Lee.
During Phantasmo’s typical nipple-twist spot, Lee surprised him by biting the Canadian’s right nipple. Lee chokeslammed his Canadian rival through the aforementioned chair pyramid. Phantasmo swung a comeback by way of Pendulum-DDT. Lee caught Phantasmo’s attempt to insert a metal plate into his boot and choked him out with a headlock, leading to referee stoppage in his favor.
There were some cool and inventive spots, and I’d say those did the heavy lifting here to make this fun.
Taichi & Yuya Uemura defeated TMDK (Ryohei Oiwa & Zack Sabre Jr.)
Oiwa and Uemura wrestled to an agile standstill. Sabre locked up with former Dangerous Tekker Taichi, securing a Snapmare Takedown and a twist of the neck. Uemura throttled Sabre’s arm, ready at every turn for a roll-up or bridging suplex. Sabre subverted this into a backslide. Oiwa crushed Uemura with a senton and side-headlock. Taichi reversed his team’s misfortunes, eventually blasting a big boot to Oiwa. TMDK cornered Taichi with a neck snap and a frog splash. Oiwa, after a stiff exchange, grounded Taichi with a side headlock. Taichi, sensing a roll-up, subverted Oiwa’s momentum with a sneaky jackknife pinfall.
I’m surprised the upcoming match with Kenny Omega at Forbidden Door wasn’t more of a factor in this. That said, I enjoyed this new generation infused with Suzuki-Gun lore.
